Cozumel Considers Building Fourth Dock
Riviera Maya News is reporting that a study is currently underway on the affects of building a fourth dock for cruise ships to dock in Cozumel.
With over 3 million passengers having already visited Cozumel in 2018, local officials have reached out to two environmental organizations to conduct studies on the environmental impacts of building a fourth terminal.
Disney Cruise Line is actually the cruise line that has shown interest in building the new terminal, reports Riviera Maya News. This fourth terminal was proposed a couple years back, but it was shot down by locals because they thought it was unnecessary.
Cozumel currently is home to three cruise ship terminals. Puerto Maya is where Carnival Ships dock, and is located south of downtown Cozumel. International Pier is also located South, and is where many other cruise lines dock. Punta Langosta is the pier that is located closest to downtown Cozumel. The new terminal would be located north.
Cozumel is one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean, and sometimes there are not enough spots for cruise ships to dock. I have been to Cozumel three times, and it is definitely one of the best ports to see many different ships from all cruise lines. The town is already crowded as it is with three piers, so I’m not sure the fourth is a great idea. However, I think it would be cool for Disney to have their own pier with three new ships on order. Who knows, Disney does whatever Disney wants, so it is very possible that this could happen.
