This headline certainly caught my attention. Specifically because I haven’t heard this story yet. A New York man has been charged with strangling and suffocating his girlfriend on a cruise ship.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York alleged that Carlos Batista Jr. “grabbed, dragged, and pulled” his girlfriend through the halls of the ship after an argument. It wasn’t reported what cruise ship it was, but it was reported that it was a ship sailing from New York to the Bahamas on September 8.

As the woman screamed, it was alleged the Batista covered her mouth and strangled her. At one point it was reported that her body went limp. The man pulled her into his cabin and continued to assault her until other passengers who heard the screaming were able to open the cabin door. It is reported that Batista was found with his arm around the woman’s neck.

Batista was charged with one count of assault of a spouse, intimate partner, or dating partner by strangling or suffocating. He will face up to 10 years in prison, if convicted.
